Mathematics - (Higher) -The Higher Level course is designed for students with competence and a good background in mathematics. Students should choose this course if they have a genuine interest in mathematics and enjoy meeting its challenges and problems, or because they need mathematics for further studies in this, or related subjects. For a few students there may be a possibility of taking a Further Maths programme in the second year. Mathematical Methods - (Standard) - Mathematical Methods is designed to provide a background of mathematical thought and a reasonable level of technical ability. It is intended to provide a sound mathematical basis for those students planning to take further studies in such areas as chemistry or business organisation. It contains a variety of mathematical topics and will be useful for any student taking physics or economics. Mathematical Studies - (Standard) - Mathematical Studies provides a mathematics course for students with varied backgrounds and abilities. Emphasis is placed on the application of mathematics to real-life situations. A substantial piece of personal research, in the form of a project, is a requirement of this course. This course is not for students who will need mathematics for the pursuit of further qualifications. Further Mathematics - (Standard) - Second Year students who are very strong in Higher Math may opt to take this challenging supplementary course, which goes beyond the Higher Mathematics Syllabus.
