The Programme

A visit usually lasts from Monday to Friday. Shorter visits of 2-4 days and single day visits can be arranged as well. Most often 2-3 classes, up to 50 people, will be here at the same time.

Morning activities:

Boat activity: - In the leitkule's wooden boat,we will try our luck with fishing and improve our rowing skills. If the wind is strong we will put the saili up and our experienced instructor will teach you the basics on sailing with a viking saill.

Canoeing - Our experienced instructor will take you paddling on the fjord. You will get an introduction to paddle techniques and safety rules, learn about communicating with the one you share a canoe with and finally you will get to paddle on your own.

Outdoor kitchen - Following a path for about 2 km, we will get to a place called Raudbua, lying right by the fjord where eagles and herons can be observed. Once we have arrived at Raudbua, we will make a fire and light the Trangia stoves, to make delicious pizzas and hot chocolate before we return to Haugland.

Afternoon activities:

Archery - On one of the two small islands belonging to the centre, we have a shooting-range for archery. You will get an introduction to the use of the bow and arrows, followed by target practice. Archery demands your full concentration and a focus on the equipment.

Climbing - Within a five-minute walk, we reach two cliffs. One of them is suitable for activities with beginners. The other cliff is well suited to both beginners and more experienced climbers. Earn confidence in yourself by climbing and rappelling - have fun by taking a ride on our rope slide.

Kayaking - After a short introduction to paddle techniques, you will put on a wetsuit and a lifejacket. The next hour we will spend on the fjord in our kayaks, helping you feeling safe in the environment by teaching you basic skills and playing games.

Biking - Equipped with a helmet and a bike you will first get to practice your balance skills by a variety of activities such as biking over and around obstacles and trying to find out who can ride the slowest.  Afterwards you will be taken on a longer ride getting to know the greater surroundings of Haugland , biking off and on the road.

Skin Diving - Depending on the weather, skin diving will take place in the pool or in the fjord. In the fjord, you will be wearing a wetsuit. Water activities and playing games will help you to build up confidence in being in the water. Wearing a snorkel, mask and flippers you will learn how to discover the fjord's underwater world.

Riding - The experienced instructors on Fjaler ridesenter, will teach you how to use and look after equipment related to horses and will take you on a horseback ride. You will also learn a lot about the Fjord-horses, special to Norway.

Excursion day - Situated right by the fjord, the waterway has been the most natural path to travel on. On our excursion day, we will explore this old way of travelling by using wooden boats, rowing to Jensbua, a restored building from the 1920s that today functions as a centre and workshop for our local cultural heritage and tourism. On our way to Jensbua we will try our luck with fishing and improve our rowing skills with six people rowing at the same time in good old Viking stile. Once we are at Jensbua, we will learn different handicraft techniques, special to the old maritime culture, such as knotwork, wood-carving and plant dye. We will also take a closer look at the place and, more important, we will have a barbecue lunch. In the afternoon we will be back at Haugland again.

Evening activities:

Welcome -Meet the instructors at RCNUWC Leirskule

Getting to know Haugland and the UWC - The college child outreach group will take you on a rather unusual tour around campus. Come and take part in this joyful gathering!

The country where I'm from - The 200 students attending our college come from over 80 different countries around the world. Among other things, they bring with them a variety of traditions, habits and languages. Two or three students will take us with them on a journey to their home countries and share parts of their cultures with us. Be prepared for a colourful experience.

Pool - Swim lanes, play in the water, take a ride on the slide or just relax in the hot pool! We have access to the pool two evenings and one afternoon during your stay from Monday to Friday.

Good bye party - On the last evening of your stay here at Haugland, a party will be arranged. To make this evening a special event, you and your classmates are expected to perform a dance, sing a song, play a sketch or introduce a game to the other leirskule visitors. We will be helpful with equipment etc. After the performance, you can play music on the CD player and dance or just be together with your new friends for the rest of the evening.
